چکیده

The primary goal of this thesis is to analyze current trends in the improvement of the performance and safety of glass during an earthquake. The four sections consist of an overview of glass as a building material, glass installation methods, rehabilitation methods for existing structures, and building code related issues. The thesis is based on an analysis of sources including books, journal articles, industry publications, and industry websites. Important discussion points include the shortcomings found in past designs to the current state-of-the-art design approaches. Finally, conclusions are made regarding the direction of the current practices and areas that should be targeted for further improvement. Thesis Supervisor: Title: Jerome J. Connor Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering

Influential Factor in Improving the Seismic Performance of the Kaiser Bolted Bracket Moment Connection

Following the Northridge earthquake of 1994, a significant number of steel moment resisting structural systems were damaged. Several studies have been conducted to improve the seismic performance of steel structures and specially their beam-to-column connections. One of the proposed connections for special moment-resisting frames included AISC-358 is Kaiser bolted bracket moment connection, bri...

Architectural Glass for Earthquake - resistant Buildings

Significant differences exist in the performance of various architectural glass types subjected to simulated earthquake conditions. Controlled laboratory studies were conducted to investigate the cracking resistance and fallout resistance of different types of architectural glass installed in the same storefront and mid-rise wall systems. Quantitative data obtained from these studies are summar...

Push over Analysis of Steel Strengthened Masonry

Strengthening of un-reinforced masonry (URM) structures to improve its seismic performance is not only well recognized among the research community but also getting attention of practicing engineers around the globe. The estimation of lateral capacity and performance of masonry becomes complex because of heterogeneous nature of its constituent materials and other associated problems. Heterogene...

Predicting Seismic Slope Displacements of Embankment Dams Using Fuzzy Systems

Iran, as a leading country in the dam construction industry, is located in one of the earthquake-prone regions of the world. Dams are important sources of hydroelectric power. Failure of these structures causes catastrophic damage. Therefore, evaluating the behavior of dams under seismic loading is an important issue. The present study focuses on the prediction of the slope displacements of emb...

Analysis of Masonry Infill Panels Retrofitted with FRP Sheets in R/C Frames

Masonry infill walls are often used as non-structural elements. According to the past structural failure, ignorance of interaction between infill walls and enclosed frame may lead to the different seismic response for non-ductile building frames. The main contribution of this paper is to analytically investigate the behavior of reinforced concrete with masonry infill panels as participating str...
